Nanouturf – Introduction
Nanouturf shows off its super-hydrophobicity compared with a flat surface. Experiments with our current Nanouturf surfaces revealed that the resistance of droplet flow on open surfaces is less than 1%, and droplet flow inside channels is less than 5% of the resistance of flat surfaces.
Nano-Engineered Flow Friction Surfaces
A problem identified in the project’s first phase was the questionable performance of Nano Turf surfaces prepared by spin-coating Teflon AF onto silicon posts. Several alternative methods to increase the hydrophobicity of the surface are being evaluated. First, the feasibility of depositing Teflon from the vapor phase is being assessed. It is unclear whether this method will result primarily in the tips of the asperities being coated or whether the coating will be uniform and methoxy silane will be used to modify silicon dioxide surfaces. In contrast, octave canethiol is being used to alter gold-coated Nano Turf.
Because we are interested in using Nano Turf to manipulate solutions, not just solvents, we evaluate the extent to which surface fouling is problematic. Contact angle, AFM, and optical methods determine the extent and distribution of surface residue left behind by fluids in contact with the Nano Turf surface. Biological molecules and carbon nanostructures, which may tend to adsorb on unmodified silicon dioxide and substrates modified by hydrophobic monolayers and films, are exciting.
